Offered by the Centre for Teaching and Learning at the University of Alberta, the New Professor Orientation is a 3-day, active learning conference that introduces new faculty members across campus to the essentials of teaching and learning. Faculty members develop their own courses: (1) reflecting on their own philosophical approach to teaching (2) structuring and sequencing course content (3) articulating course objectives (4) selecting instructional strategies to engage students and (5) developing student assessment.
- Research and explore creative ways to engage faculty members in the curriculum design process
- Organize and manage the conference: planning participant activities, overseeing logistics and support staff, designing and developing promotional and print materials
- Design and develop participant manuals (includes: writing and editing content, setting agendas and daily objectives, outlining the purpose and instructions for each activity, selecting and developing learner resources, guiding graphic designer)
- Facilitate event; engaging participants in active learning process, guiding discussions and activities and modelling excellence in teaching and learning
- Advise and work one-on-one with faculty on course redesign
- Develop evaluation tool to determine event success
